The Tutor Trust
Intervention description
The Tutor Trust is a not-for-profit social enterprise which places tutors in schools to work with disadvantaged pupils. The tutors work either one-to-one or with small groups of pupils.
Tutors work in secondary and primary schools across Greater Manchester, Leeds and Liverpool. At primary they work with KS2 pupils, mainly years 5 and 6 in English and maths. At secondary they work in English, maths or science with KS3 and KS4 pupils, this can include GCSE resits and adult courses.
Tutors are drawn from university students, they are all selected and trained by the Tutor Trust. Tutors are paid and are obliged to give one hour of free tuition for every six paid hours.
The cost of the Tutor Trust is flexible and depends on a range of factors, including the tutor to pupil ratio selected by the school.
Staffing requirements
The Trust selects, trains, and insures tutors, and also handles the logistics of organising lessons.
Evidence Summary
The Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) funded a project in 2018 investigating the maths attainment of Year 6 pupils who were working below expected levels. Pupils received 12 hours of tuition during the school day. The study found a mean effect size of +0.19 for primary maths.
The EEF previously ran projects (2015) investigating the effectiveness of tuition from The Tutor Trust in primary schools and secondary schools, which gave insufficient indication of positive effects of the intervention. The EEF funded the more recent study to test whether the intervention can work at scale in a large number of schools.
Key research
The Education Endowment Foundation (2018) funded a study to evaluate the Tutor Trust approach. The evaluation used a two-armed randomised controlled trial involving 105 primary schools with double the average number of disadvantaged pupils across Greater Manchester and Leeds.

The Education Endowment Foundation ran initial trials in primary schools. Due to the study’s design and problems recruiting schools to receive tuition or participate in the evaluation, this evaluation has not provided a secure estimate of the impact of the project on pupil outcomes.
The Education Endowment Foundation ran initial trials in secondary schools. Due to the limitations of the study design and the absence of a high-quality comparison group, this evaluation has not provided a secure estimate of the impact of the project on academic outcomes.
