Intervention description

Boosting Reading Potential is a targeted one-to-one intervention scheme which aims to improve the way children read. The intervention lasts 10 weeks and is delivered in 15-minute sessions which follow a common structure and focus on the development of independent reading strategies. All participants receive a booklet including handouts for the course and support material to enable them to deliver the programme to children.

Trained partners work on a one-to-one basis with a child following a common lesson structure designed to support the development of the reading skills required for academic success. The reading partners are encouraged to discuss the text with the pupil, and are trained to prompt the pupil to problem-solve difficulties and to develop independent reading strategies. Each session follows a similar format of re-reading a known and familiar text, re-reading a book recently taken home, and introducing a new text. There are two versions of the programme: boostingreading@primary and boostingreading@secondary.

Staffing requirements

A teacher (preferably SMT) is appointed as the school coordinator.

Professional development/training

Experienced teaching assistants, support assistants, learning mentors and volunteers attend intensive training. This can be delivered as a two day package or in a modular format, with the time and space for gap tasks to consolidate learning. A teacher (preferably SMT) is also expected to attend the training.
