Chatterbooks

No impact for Secondary reading

Intervention description

Chatterbooks is a reading group scheme for children aged between 4 and 14. Chatterbooks groups can be set up anywhere, and often take place in libraries or schools. The scheme is organised by the charity The Reading Agency, who are also responsible for selling Chatterbooks resources and running training in how to implement Chatterbooks.

Evidence Summary

The Education Endowment Foundation recently ran a project investigating the effectiveness of Chatterbooks, which gave insufficient indication of positive effects of the intervention. The study found a mean effect size of -0.08 in secondary reading

Key research

From the observations and interviews with staff in the process evaluation, a lack of engagement and poor behaviour spoiled the delivery of some sessions. This may have contributed to the lack of impact in the intervention.
