Intervention description

Early Talk is an intervention which aims to help the early years workforce work in partnership with parents to support the communication needs of children from birth to age 5.

The ‘Supporting Communication and Language’ training focuses on increasing participants’ knowledge of typical communication and language development, developing practitioners’ strategies and interaction styles to maximise their opportunities to develop every child’s skills in communication and language. The ‘Enhancing Communication and Language’ training, aimed at practitioners who have some knowledge of speech and language development and difficulties in children aged 0-5, helps practitioners to identify and support those children with Speech, Language and Communication Needs within their setting, working with parents and other professionals to support the child.

Professional development/training

The intervention is provided by I CAN, who offer a training programme at two levels which can be delivered in-school, or to a cluster of schools. A range of training modules are delivered by I CAN Communication Advisor or Tutors, titles include 'Working with under 3s', 'Working with parents', 'Supporting communication and language', 'Enhancing communication and language',
