Intervention description

Nippy Numbers is a multi-sensory programme for the teaching of numeracy based on the work of Professor Sharma. It is aimed at pupils who struggle to understand mathematical concepts and for those who need support to recall number facts, but it is suitable for all.

Nippy Numbers was developed to provide user-friendly and readily accessible materials for use in Key Stages 1, 2 and 3 and beyond. It teaches the four basic number operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Nippy Numbers can be used with small intervention groups or in a wider class setting.

The intervention consists of a handbook which describes how to teach the concepts of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division using Cuisenaire rods. The handbook provides lesson structures and teaching sequence to enable children to learn addition facts and multiplication tables. A CD provides coloured resources to print out. Other resources include Nippy Number Assessment Cards, Tables Assessment Cards and Tables Programmes.
