Intervention description

GROW@KS3 Literacy is a literacy intervention for pupils in Year 7 and 8 whose literacy skills are below age related expectations. GROW stands for growth in reading, oracy and writing. The GROW lesson cycle fosters growth in reading, oracy and writing. It aims to produce independent and highly motivated learners, whose literacy improves every time they read and write.

GROW involves a short series of lessons, a minimum of three times a week, for a ten week initial period. Lessons last for 30-40 minutes. A further 15 minutes per lesson is useful for reflection on the pupil's responses and forward planning for the next lesson. Lessons run in a 6 lesson cycle from reading to writing. Where pupils have a similar profile of learning needs, GROW can be taught in groups of 3 pupils. Where pupils are vulnerable or have more individual needs, GROW can be taught in one to one lessons.

Lessons are led by teachers, HLTAs, SENCOs, or librarians who have attended GROW professional development. Formative feedback on jointly agreed learning goals is matched to pupils' growing competencies.

professional development/training

GROW@KS3 professional development courses take place over 3 days and cost £670 per participant. There is a discount for the second participant from the same school undertaking the training. It is accredited by the UCL Institute of Education and delivered at regional venues.

The three days includes literacy assessment, reading and comprehension; writing, including talk for writing and guiding writing. It promotes understanding of theories of literacy development for older pupils; formative assessment techniques; the development of strategic activity across reading, oracy and writing with critical reflection and responsive teaching.
