Sparx Maths Homework
Intervention description
Sparx Maths Homework is an online intervention designed for pupils from KS3 to GCSE. Spark automatically sets one hour of personalised homework for every pupil every week.
Sparx develops a user profile for each pupil, identifying their strengths and weaknesses, and sets homework. The homework includes revision and consolidation. Parents receive weekly progress emails containing a topical video helping them support their child’s learning.
Over 8,100 video tutorials support over 34,000 hand-written questions covering the KS3 and GCSE maths curriculum, encouraging independent learning. Recommended usage is 40 minutes per week minimum.
Sparx Maths (comprising classroom and homework) will be available in schools from January 2020.
TECHNICAL
Pupils will need an internet connection for homework.
Evidence Summary
Nawaz and Welbourne carried out a study into the effectiveness of Sparx. The study used a randomised controlled trial involving 368 pupils from three schools using Sparx to deliver their maths homework.
The trial took place over four weeks and so was too short in length to be included in the E4I evidence rating.
