Rhythm For Reading
Intervention description
Rhythm for Reading is a rhythm-based group reading intervention for children with fragile reading fluency or comprehension. It comprises a ten-week course of weekly ten-minute lessons in which children take part in rhythm-based exercises while reading musical notation, and perform simple actions developing physical co-ordination and balance. The sessions are delivered in the first instance by specialists who later train classroom teachers to deliver the intervention. Rhythm For Reading was designed by Marion Long, who is the point of contact for schools wishing to sign up to the programme.
Professional development/training
As well as the resources, schools also receive two in-school training sessions, a 10-week demonstration of the programme, reports on the programme’s impact on pupils’ standardised reading scores, and continuous professional development for staff.
Evidence Summary
Rhythm For Reading was evaluated by the Education Endowment Foundation in 2014, but the evaluation did not meet the quality needed to change its evidence rating.
Key research
Previous evaluation work in combination with the process evaluation findings indicates that the intervention may be more suitable to be trialled and evaluated with more able younger pupils
